Working
Together For Affordable Housing |
|
Since its inception
in 1991, the Affordable Housing
Conference of Montgomery County (AHCMC)
continues to tackle affordable housing
related issues and their impacts
specifically upon Montgomery County, MD
residents. The mission of AHCMC is to
bring together elected officials,
housing and community development
leaders, business professionals,
activists and others to work toward
affordable housing solutions. |
| Through its annual conference,
awards programs, seminars, advocacy
efforts and roundtable meetings, AHCHC
seeks to form coalitions that identify
and address issues including, but not
limited to, workforce housing, mixed-use
and mixed-income developments,
inclusionary zoning, preservation of
rental housing, first time home
ownership, lending and fair housing,
public-private partnerships and housing
for people with disabilities. Throughout
the year, Board members work closely
with local, state and federal government
officials, private developers, financial
institutions and other nonprofit
organizations to insure that affordable
housing remains at the forefront of
local, state and national legislative
and regulatory agendas. As a 501(c)(3)
organization, AHCMC is able to provide
technical and advisory assistance and
work closely with organizations in their
efforts to provide affordable housing
efficiently and effectively. |
| The success of AHCMC is the result
of the dedication and volunteer efforts
of key people within the public, private
and nonprofit sectors and of the
financial contributions of corporations
and organizations willing to invest
resources in devising solutions to this
issue. |
| During its 19-year history, AHCMC
has hosted events for thousands of
participants where many notable housing
and economic development experts have
presented their ideas and strategies for
achieving a balance of market-rate and
low-to-moderate income housing. Senator
Paul Sarbanes, Honorary Chairman of AHC,
has attended each year’s annual
conference to present an overview of
federal legislative activity as it
relates to housing. In addition, AHC
has hosted well-respected housing
experts such as: Congressman Chris Van
Hollen; Congressman Al Wynn; former
Governor Bob Ehrlich; former HUD Deputy
Secretary, Saul N. Ramirez, Jr.; former
Senior Advisor to HUD and President
Clinton, Mark Weiss; former Governors
William D. Schaefer and Paris Glendening;
former Congresswoman Connie Morella; and
Washington Post columnists, Roger Lewis
and Joel Garreau; just to name a few. |
| AHCMC has three signature award
programs: the Senator Paul Sarbanes
“Excellence in Community Service”;
“Break the Barrier to Homeownership”
closing cost assistance; and
Architectural Design awards for
innovative green housing, new
construction and renovation projects. |
