The Affordable Housing Conference of Montgomery County
(the Conference) has been in existence since 1991. It is
a highly-respected 501c3 nonprofit entity. In 2001, the
Conference launched its
"Break the Barrier to Home Ownership” closing cost
assistance program to encourage homeownership in
Montgomery County, MD. This effort was initiated because
of the strong and unwavering desire to provide direct
assistance to families who, but for lack of down payment
funds, or enough funds to cover closing costs could not
purchase their own homes. To date, the Conference has
been able to raise between $10,000.00 to $20,000.00 each
year from generous corporate and individual donors and
so far, 21 families have received $137,500 in assistance
since 2001. |

Funding for the “Break the
Barrier to Home Ownership” closing cost assistance
program is considered as a grant to each contest
winner. There is no expectation to repay the financial
assistance provided. The funds may be used for
down payment and/or closing cost assistance. Each
year’s winners are chosen on the basis of an essay they
each write entitled “What Homeownership Means to Me” and
finalist interviews. Winners must be present to receive
recognition of their award at the annual Affordable
Housing Summit. The funds must be used to purchase a
home in Montgomery County, MD. Each grant is available
for funding for one 12-month period and funds are
distributed directly to the settlement attorney at the
time of loan closing, as directed by each winner. |
