    Though Congress passed the Fair Housing Act in 1968, homeownership rates for minorities (African American 43%; Latinx 49% continue to lag far behind whites (75%).  This also translates to a deficit in generational wealth and less opportunity to live in desired neighborhoods close to transit, jobs, good schools and thriving communities.  This panel will examine discriminatory practices and solutions with promise to finally level the playing field.

    The Disability community has long championed the principle of self-determination to live their best lives.  Though affordable, quality housing has remained a persistent challenge for persons with disabilities, inspired communities have emerged in recent years enabling these individuals to live their best lives.  This panel will explore different housing models along with financing, lessons learned, and future plans.

    Montgomery County projects a need for an additional 2,226 units of affordable housing per year at an annual investment of $121 million through 2030.  In recent years, the County has fallen far short of that mark, though new initiatives and financing strategies may have the potential to accelerate both housing production and preservation.  This panel will explore the mechanics of those strategies and partnerships forged to leverage financial resources, and identify additional measures needed.

  • Looming Eviction Crisis in Our Own Backyard

    With the Covid state of emergency and eviction moratorium expiring, the uneven economic recovery and delays in releasing the last round of rental assistance, many County residents face the real possibility of eviction.  This panel will examine needed changes revealed by the covid experience to ensure tenant dignity and housing security when facing eviction, and the role that housing providers play in supporting tenants and managing rental arrearages.

    Demographic trends forecast that Seniors will comprise the greatest share of population growth in the County.  Just as most residents seek safe neighborhoods, close to transit, shopping, and social activities, Seniors seek the same living arrangement.  While many strive to age in their homes, others move into senior communities that also provide the services and amenities they need.  This panel will explore the availability and affordability of housing options, services, and strategies for seniors.

About this Event


The Affordable Housing Conference of Montgomery County (AHCMC) – a nonpartisan, nonprofit organization – believes that affordable, decent, and safe housing is an inalienable right, and not a privilege, for every American. 


Join us on Friday, May 20
th at the Bethesda North Marriott Hotel & Conference Center for conversations on Cross-Sector Collaboration: Finding Solutions to the Affordable Housing Crisis. Registration is now open! Both In-Person and Virtual tickets are available for purchase.


Instructions to attend this event will be emailed to all registered attendees on Thursday, May 19th, 2022. 

AIA/LU/HSW credits and Realtor CEUs will be available.

FAQs

  • When does the event start? Where do I go?

    The event will take place on Friday, May 20th!  


    Registration opens at 8:00 AM and the Opening Plenary will begin at 8:30 AM.


    For registration, please proceed to the lower level of the conference center.  There will be signage to guide you.

  • Can I attend the event virtually?

    Yes!  Please see each session description for the Zoom link.  

  • Are there Continuing Education Credits (CEUs) available?

    Yes!  The Real Estate Commission has approved 3.5 CEU's to Realtors attending the Opening Plenary and two panels.


    The AIA has approved LU and HSW credit for the Opening Plenary at 1.5 hours, and one hour LU for each of the two panels they attend.

  • Are you taking any health and safety precautions?

    Yes.  The organization has made the decision that all in-person attendees are required to be vaccinated in order to attend.  


    Masks will also be required during all sessions except when actively eating or drinking. 

  • What is there to do between sessions?

    In between sessions, attendees can grab a beverage and visit the Exhibit Hall to speak directly with representatives from participating organizations.

  • What is after the Summit?

  • Will meals be provided?

    Yes!  Both breakfast and a boxed lunch will be provided to in-person attendees.

  • Is there parking available?

    Yes, parking will be available at the Conference Center Parking Garage (5701 Marinelli Road; North Bethesda, MD 20852).  Parking is $2.50 an hour with the first two hours free, the third hour is $7.50 and each additional hour is $2.50 with a daily max of $30.
